Biography

Amnaj Wachirasut’s paintings demand time and sustained attention. Viewed straight on, they may appear as a single field of color stretching across the entire canvas. Yet as the viewing angle shifts, light catches the brushstrokes and overlapping layers of paint, gradually revealing hidden forms. At times they resemble landscapes; at others, living creatures—before dissolving back into the background. Amnaj deliberately works with a limited palette. For him, painting begins as an engagement with the artist’s own mind before reaching the viewer. His images often originate in familiar sources: places he has visited, scenes from films, photographs, printed matter, or images encountered online. Once transformed through his hand, however, their origins become almost impossible to trace. What remains is the emotional residue lingering on the painted surface. This way of seeing stems from his Vipassana meditation practice, which has led him to revisit aspects of his inner life that he once overlooked. In his view, anger, sadness, and joy are merely tiny particles. He likens them to the most minute particles described in Buddhist thought—almost imperceptible, yet undeniably real and continually changing from one form into another. His paintings are an attempt to make these particles visible. Born in 1970, Amnaj holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in painting from Silpakorn University. His work has been presented regularly in solo and group exhibitions in Thailand and abroad, and he remains an active presence in the contemporary art world.
