Biography

Sergei Gapanovich (b. 1981) is a Russian sculptor known for monumental land art interventions and conceptual sculpture. He primarily works in stone, particularly marble and granite. He spends most of his time in northern Russia and travels extensively worldwide. Married, with a son, two dogs, and an old cat, Gapanovich considers himself to be living his best and happiest life.

Artist statement

I work with contradictions. I am interested in why we expect marble to look expensive, stone to feel heavy, authority to seem convincing, protection to feel secure, and adulthood to embody maturity. In my work, I seek to subvert these seemingly obvious associations. I take materials associated with strength and durability and compel them to embody something fragile, cheap, childlike, or ephemeral. Marble becomes a toy or plastic; stone takes the form of an object that, at first glance, would not last a day. In other works, I aim to address love, fear, aggression, power, human vulnerability, and the desire to control the world around us.
