About this work

The Distinguished Artist Playing the Ranat Ek (วิศิษฏศิลปินทรงระนาดเอก) is a watercolour on paper painted in 2026 by Bunleang Dumthongsuk, a Poh-Chang-trained Thai painter known for his range of subjects and techniques, measuring 45 × 55 cm including frame, and it is a royal portrait showing the figure seated at a ranat ek, the Thai treble xylophone, dressed in soft lavender, the instrument's elegant, boat-shaped black body garlanded along its length with flowers in pink, yellow, violet and blue, all set against loose watercolour washes of magenta, purple and deep red that bleed into one another like music filling the air, a respectful tribute to royal musical talent rendered with the luminous beauty of watercolour, and a fitting subject for an artist whose name, Bunleang, means "to play music", presented in a gold frame with a mat, ready to hang for lovers of Thai classical music or as a treasured keepsake.
