JIADONG YAN

Biography

Jiadong Yan (b. 2000, Gansu Province, China) is a Chinese artist based in Thailand. He holds a B.F.A. in Environmental Design from Lishui University and an M.F.A. in Visual Arts from Chiang Mai University, and is now a D.F.A. candidate in Visual Arts at Silpakorn University. His practice centres on mineral painting, a technique rooted in Asia’s ancient mural traditions. He works with natural mineral pigments, coloured clays and metal leaf on mulberry and Sa paper. He also makes mud-brick murals that study and reinterpret imagery from Buddhist cave sites such as Kizil. Materials sit at the heart of his work. He collects earth pigments from across Northern Thailand and from his hometown of Jiayuguan, makes his own tamarind-seed glue, and has trained in Thai lacquer techniques such as Lai Rod Nam. Flowers are his most frequent subject, including wisteria, hydrangea, osmanthus, orchids and the Himalayan blue poppy. Through them he explores memory, displacement, stillness and quiet resilience. He builds and polishes his surfaces in many layers of pigment, so time and accumulation become visible in the work and the viewer is asked to look slowly. He also works in watercolour, cyanotype mixed media, illustration and Chinese calligraphy. Yan presented his first solo exhibition, Spending Times, at La Luna Gallery in Chiang Mai in 2025. He co-curated and exhibited in Mineral Painting · Infinite Horizons at Baan Tuek Art Center (2025) and took part in SICTAS 2026 at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. In China, his work has been shown at the Baiyin Art Museum, the Jing’an District Cultural Center in Shanghai and the Lishui City Art Museum.
