About this work
This hand-carved jade sema leaf measures just 2.5 × 1.9 cm and is estimated to date from around 1857–1907 (B.E. 2400–2450). It is carved in low relief in the classic Thai sema form: two softly curved edges rise to a lotus-like point above a plain, tiered base. Despite its tiny scale, the lines and proportions remain crisp, a sign of careful craftsmanship. In Thailand, sema stones mark the sacred boundary around a temple's ordination hall, and the form has long been bound up with Buddhist life. Collectors often associate it with stability and protection, which has made it a favoured shape for amulets and devotional objects. The stone has a naturally aged green-brown patina with flecks of green that speak to its years. The front bears what appear to be hand-inscribed marks. Their origin has not been verified, and it is not known whether the piece is connected to a revered monk of the period. The piece is sold loose and unframed. It suits collectors of Thai antiques and anyone who wishes to set it in gold and diamonds as a pendant or piece of heritage jewellery with both historical and aesthetic value. Note: The gold and diamond case shown is for illustration only and is not included. Age, stone type and the origin of the inscriptions are the seller's estimates.
