About this work

Disco 2 (ตะวันแดงดิสโก้ 2) is an 83 × 110 cm acrylic painting from 2012 by Anuchat Thananchai, a Chiang Mai-born painter inspired by French Impressionism, and it shows two clusters of stage lights on the left and right, each lamp bursting into a white star-shaped flare and throwing beams of white, pale blue and soft lilac in many directions, the crossing beams carving overlapping triangles and angular planes against a ground of deep navy, muted green and blue-grey, with a warm yellow glow shining in the distance at upper right, the gradation from blazing points of light into darkness and the near-geometric interplay of the beams capturing the movement, rhythm and energy of a night of music, a more complex and abstract companion to Disco 1
