About this work

Composition 1 (องค์ประกอบศิลป์ 1) is an 83 × 110 cm acrylic painting from 2013 by Anuchat Thananchai, a Chiang Mai-born painter inspired by French Impressionism. It is an almost entirely blue abstract composition of large, softly rounded forms that swell and dip gently, like folds of fabric, sand dunes or the curves of an object seen extremely close up. On the right, a deep navy vertical crease divides the canvas in two, while a long curve sweeps across the lower half like a horizon. The finely graded shift from muted blue to deep navy, with almost no visible brushwork, gives the work a misty softness and a calm, deep, contemplative mood. It shows how the artist can build a powerful atmosphere from light, shadow and form alone, without saying what the picture is.
