About this work

Composition 2 (องค์ประกอบศิลป์ 2) is a 110 × 83 cm acrylic painting from 2013 by Anuchat Thananchai, a Chiang Mai-born painter inspired by French Impressionism. It is an abstract composition of long, tapering planes that overlap and slant towards points converging on the right, like large leaves, folds of fabric or layered hills in mist. Across the top, a dark horizontal band and faint rectangular shapes create depth, as if seen through a window or reflected in water. The palette is blue-grey, olive and muted green, set against dark green-black recesses. The soft gradations, with almost no visible brushwork, give the work a quiet, calm and contemplative mood. A companion to Composition 1, it follows the same approach of building atmosphere from light, shadow and form alone, but shifts from blue to grey-green.
