Composition 5 (องค์ประกอบศิลป์ 5) is a 110 × 83 cm acrylic painting from 2013 by Anuchat Thananchai, a Chiang Mai-born painter inspired by French Impressionism. It is a dark brown abstract composition of two large curving forms that sweep diagonally and meet at the centre, where ridged creases and folds catch a soft golden light, like tree bark, the hide of a large animal such as an elephant, or folds of leather seen extremely close up. The palette shifts from near-black brown and olive brown to touches of gold and pale violet where the light falls, capturing a rough, finely lined surface that feels heavy, warm and weathered by time. The fifth work in his Composition series, it builds atmosphere from light, shadow and form alone, and is the darkest and most intense piece in the series, leaving it open to each viewer's own reading.
