About this work
Disco 1 (ตะวันแดงดิสโก้ 1) is a 110 × 83 cm acrylic painting by Anuchat Thananchai, a Chiang Mai-born painter inspired by French Impressionism, and it shows a row of four spotlights glowing in the darkness, each bursting into a brilliant white star-shaped flare and casting blue-green beams diagonally downward, crossed by fine shafts of light that shoot upward and intersect in the air, set against a deep navy, almost black ground sprinkled with glittering white specks like haze and dust caught in stage lights over a dance floor, the soft gradation from the brightest points into darkness capturing the energy, excitement and atmosphere of a night of music, showing how the artist's lifelong study of light and shadow in landscapes translates just as powerfully to the artificial light of the city
