About this work

School (โรงเรียน) is a 150 × 100 cm acrylic painting by Anuchat Thananchai, a Chiang Mai-born painter inspired by French Impressionism who has taught art for decades. Painted in the style of a child's drawing, it shows a school building with flags on its roof at the top of the picture, and below it a crowd of characters: a tall man in an orange shirt, tie and green trousers, a girl in a blue dress and beret, and big round faces with broad, cheerful grins, among trees, grassy slopes and a winding path. Bold black lines run across the whole canvas and divide it into pastel panes of green, yellow, lilac and blue, like stained glass. The work reflects the artist's deep connection to teaching and captures the brightness, innocence and warm memories of school days through a child's eyes, a clear departure from his Impressionist landscapes
