About this work
Shadow (เงา) is a 100 × 120 cm acrylic painting by Anuchat Thananchai, a Chiang Mai-born painter inspired by French Impressionism, and it shows a close view of a water surface filled with the reflections of trees and sunlight, the upper half alive with deep green, yellow-green and creamy bands of light that shimmer into vertical streaks with the ripples, while the lower half gradually deepens into blue, indigo and violet, flecked with small touches of pink and yellow drifting on the surface, and with no horizon or bank in view the world above is known only through its wavering reflection, the long, continuous horizontal strokes creating the movement of the rippling water in a spirit close to Monet's water lily paintings, capturing the calm, depth and ever-changing beauty of light
