About this work

Untitled 1 (ไม่มีชื่อ 1) is a 100 × 120 cm acrylic painting from 2012 by Anuchat Thananchai, a Chiang Mai-born painter inspired by French Impressionism. It is an abstract composition of angular and rounded fragments that overlap and fold together into a dense mass, like ice crystals, crumpled paper or flower petals seen up close. Blue-green dominates, from soft pale aqua to blue-grey. At the centre, a deep navy recess draws the eye inward, where a small fleck of golden yellow glows in the darkness like a hidden spark. The smooth surface and gentle gradations of light and shade give each form a sense of mass, as if it could be touched. It shares the visual language of his Color Power series but has a calmer, cooler and more mysterious mood, and its title leaves it open to each viewer's own reading.
